Preventive Maintenance

Before we throw our legs over the saddle, and push the start switch, there are several inspections that should be performed.  Listed below are some of the critical areas that should receive your attention:

Tires and Wheels:
-Check tire sidewalls for cracks or foreign objects
-Check tire tread depth and for foreign objects puncturing the tire
-Check for proper air pressure and for possible air leaks at the valve stem
-Check wheel rims for damage, dents, cracks, loose spokes, etc.

Lights and Electrical:
-Check that the battery is properly charged, especially if it has not been
on a charger during its hibernation period
-Turn on ignition switch and check that the headlights (high and low beam),
and taillights work properly.
-While ignition switch is on, push each turn signal switch to verify that
the front and rear turn signal lights work properly.
-In addition, check that the front and rear brake lights work when activated
**Consider purchasing a new battery annually. It could be a long and 
embarrassing walk to the nearest motorcycle dealership.

Controls:
-Check for any frayed or cracked brake/clutch cables or hoses
operate the clutch, brakes and throttle. Listen for any unusual sounds
(squeaks, clicks, rattles, etc).
-Check clutch and brake levers for cracks and properly lubricate
-Check for proper front and rear brake operation

Oils and Fluids:
-Check oil and other fluids for proper levels
-Check for fluids weeping or seeping on any engine parts, especially near
gaskets

Chassis:
-Check for any cracks or in the frame or broken weld
-Check for improper wear or adjustment to the drive train (belts or chains)

Kickstand:
-Check for cracks or unusual bends
-Check kickstand spring to ensure that it returns the kickstand tightly to
the frame.
